“I remember…” Another reflection by Thành ( EE 1990)

I remember…

… the all nighters we pulled before midterms and final exams…

… the night we played basketball at Middle Earth court, at midnight, under the rain!

… telling the guys that ten, twenty years from now, we will not remember the tests and the details and the pain and sufferings of our UCI days, but we will remember playing basketball, at Middle Earth court, at midnight, under the rain, with friends and acting generally crazy!

… the first day showing up at UCI and naively mistook the Cashier Office for the place where I can cash my financial check

…walking across Aldrich Park in a daze after getting my first C+ ever in my life

… getting cheap food at the Common late at night

… finding parking spot and asked people repeatedly: “Are you leaving?”

… pretending that I was leaving and playing coy to people who asked me: “Are you leaving?”

… people camping out all night long to get a spot in O Chem with Dr Taggapera

… the engineering professors who barely can speak English, and on top of that, mumbling to the blackboard instead of talking to us…

… the feminist professor who first told me why men wear ties…

… Interfaith!

… the endless applications to professional schools

… job hunting with Career Center

… Wayzgoose

… Aldrich Park

… watermelons dropping off the engineering building during Engineering Week

… my heart fluttering and my head spinning

… now that all I remember from Quantum Physics is …nothing!

… good prayer sessions with Hạt Cải

… the impromptu sing-along, howl-together sessions late Friday afternoons with Đạt at the piano at Interfaith

… Quán Nhớ!

… rushing across Aldrich Park from Fine Arts to Science Hall for a good seat at biology lectures

… sleeping in engineering lectures!

… the first girl who cooked some food for me since she has a good heart and I had no food.  She became my wife… Now I cook for her!

… saying to myself many times in the past to write down the events and the mundane of my life as to not forget them in the future.  So, here they are…

What do you remember???

Thành ( EE 1990)

Life goes on… Reflection by Thành & Mên

Life goes on…

So many years passed by, so many things happened. Here we are, again at UCI with so many memories, some bad, some downright ugly, but mostly good…We are going to walk down these memory lanes (literally and figuratively) of joy and friendships and heartaches and happiness and…

Across the years, there have been so many life chapters passing through each of us:   jobs, marriage, birth of our children, passing of friends, interviews, school, applications, trainings, … We are certainly wiser and more seasoned (including my hair color!) and older…Yet, friends and UCI always have a special place in our heart, for one thing we learn along the way was that money comes and goes, jobs change, but the only thing we have left are people and memories.

Across the years, we come to understand more and better appreciate the words of Louis Armstrong when he sings his song:

” I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They’re really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world. ”

Yes, it has been a blessing all these years…Whether each of us believes in a God or not, we have been blessed with friends and with UCI.  So, here is a hearty thank you to UCI and to friends, thank you for being a part of our lives…We hope to see you all at the reunion…

Thành ( EE 1990) and Mên ( Bio 1989-90)
